Mark Amery’s Weekly Art Column Axed by the Dominion
In line with the continuing decline in arts coverage by New Zealand’s corporate mainstream media, The Dominion has axed Mark Amery’s excellent weekly column. Amery, who is Director of Playmarket, has provided a rare critical voice on art in the capital city these past few years. In fact for many of us in the arts, his column was the only reason to ever pick up The Dominion at all. Amery’s level of local engagement and his willingness to engage in important sometimes controversial issues has made his column instrumental in propelling an arts dialogue forward in this city. This axing not only deprives us of a quality local voice but sends an ominous sign in terms of the future of mainstream arts coverage in this country as our media’s corporate owners continue to look for new ways to cut costs and lower our expectations.
