Darcy Lange Survey At Adam Art Gallery

Now showing at Wellington’s Adam Art Gallery is a survey of mixed media work by pioneering New Zealand artist Darcy Lange (1946-2005). The exhibition, Darcy Lange: Study of an artist at work includes the artist’s video, film, sculpture and photographic work focusing on his seminal documentary studies of people at work. Study of an artist at work is curated by Mercedes Vicente and was first shown at New Plymouth’s Govett-Brewster earlier in the year. Mercedes says: "Lange had a remarkable early career; he enjoyed the recognition of critics and curators as well as his artist peers. He was very much part of the 1970s international avant-garde and video art scene in London and New York, however he remained a marginal figure in New Zealand."

Darcy Lange: Study of an artist at work shows at Adam Art Gallery until May 13. www.vuw.ac.nz/adamartgal

A New Book Of Fiction By Jason Shelley

We recently received in the mail The Romance by Jason Shelley featuring illustrations by Vishal Shah, and published by London’s Tlon Books. The first page promised that there would be ‘absolutely no fucking cocks allowed in this prose’. That promise was broken by the second page. The text is a piece of work written by Shelley at the beginning of the century. One 24-hour sitting of writing and four years of breathing space later, and the compact hardback has finally been released, two years ago. The artists stress that each page is an individual work of art. Essentially the story is about one man and his love for his craft. For more info check out: www.tlon.co.uk

01/04/07Kiosk at The Emily Carr Institute, Vancouver

Kiosk – stage 19 – opens at Artists’ Space in New York

Kiosk, a traveling archive of independent publication projects on contemporary art, has just opened at Artists’ Space in New York. This is the 19th exhibition of the continually evolving collection run by German publisher / curator Christoph Keller. Aiming to provide an overview of the whole bandwidth and variety of independent publishing activities, the archive now features more than 5,300 publications, including periodicals, zines, video and audio projects.

Kiosk was in New Zealand last year where it was twice exhibited, at ARTSPACE in Auckland and The Physics Room in Christchurch. In has since been hosted by the Emily Carr institute in Vancouver. Kiosk’s 20th exhibition will be in Minneapolis during September at Midway Contemporary (dates to be confirmed). In January it will return to Europe where it will be presented in Rennes, France and then at the State Library of Berlin in summer of ’08. Keller is currently discussing with the State Library – the biggest library in Germany – about the possibility of handing over the archive to its collection where it would be permanently available.

Kiosk runs at Artists’ Space in New York until May 12.

An interview with Christoph Keller talking about Kiosk and independent publishing in general can be found in White Fungus issue 6.
