TOM KREISLER AT GOVETT-BREWSTER

Just about to open at New Plymouth’s Govett-Brewster is Tom Kreisler, the first comprehensive survey of Tom Kreisler (1938-2002), an artist critic Wystan Curnow calls "possibly New Zealand’s most under-recognised important painter". Curated by son Aaron Kreisler, the exhibition features more than 40 large-scale paintings, altered ready-mades, works on found materials, drawings and notebooks in a reconsideration of the artist’s work and its impact on fellow artists, writers and critical thinkers across New Zealand.

Tom Kreisler runs at Govett-Brewster Art Gallery 3 March-13 May.

Set to coincide with the opening of Tom Kreisler is the launch of comma dot dogma, a 196-page monograph of Kreisler’s work with four new texts by Wystan Curnow, John Hurrell, Deborah Cain and Aaron Kreisler. The book is the first to be released by Umbrella, the Wellington-based print and publication design company.

Exit Dunedin

Exit Dunedin - a recent project organised by Wellington artist John Borley – undertook the task of proving this year’s graduates of Dunedin’s School of Fine Art with detailed critical responses to their work from a team of invited arts professionals. Inspired, in part, by a 2002 project Static that took place in Liverpool, Exit sought to deal with the issues and problems confronting art students moving from the protected environment of the art school into the professional realm by giving students a direct experience of public reception of their work.
